My Second Luxury 5th Wheel
2016 Solitude 300GK
What I liked most: This model is lovely and fit our "half-timer" needs perfectly. It is spacious, has a lot of inside and outside storage, a dishwasher (and I don't mean my wife-;) ), lots of windows, and a huge 18 cf refer. It's a great floorplan for a couple doing extended stay type RVing. We usually do two 90 day great adventures birding around the country. We will usually stay a week at a location and move on so we are both enjoying the ease of set up/break down as well as the luxury of the amenities of this rig. My first 5th wheel was a 2003 37' Newmar Kountry Star. It was a beautiful rig and was a great find for us. When it started getting old, last year, we started looking for a replacement. Newmar stopped making 5th wheels in 2012 I think and we wanted to buy new. We camped beside a Grand Design product and got into a discussion with the owners. They were very informative so we looked them up. What I think I'm most impressed with is the customer support Grand Design is willing to give. It is truely above anything I've ever experienced. With all trailers you have to figure there will be issues if you pull them around a lot. We pulled the Newmar over 40k and had issues but nothing you wouldn't expect being the rig is in a constant "3.0 earthquake" rolling down the road. You have to expect things to loosen or bend so don't go into this thinking that just because it's expensive that it will be flaw free unless of course you just go plant it somewhere. With persisitant preventative maintenance and a pattern of checking things as you "roll", a "do it yourself" type person (me) can catch and manage most issues that come up. The support from the manufacurer is what makes the biggest difference. Our Grand Design dealer is also very cooperative. I recently had an issue with the hub seals letting grease get on the drum and brakes. Both the dealer and Grand Design jumped right in and fixed this at no cost to me other than getting the rig to the shop. That's fantastic service!
What I'd improve: I don't think there is a thing I would change. Each model year they do improvements but for us this was a perfect fit.9 years ago | Ted H. from Athol, MA
