Top 5 Best Small Motorhomes For Campgrounds!

RVs are one of the most convenient ways to camp. The sheer number of features it has, in addition to the freedom of being able to drive or tow it throughout the country worry-free is always an awesome adventure! But even as they are perfect for convenient and fun adventures, problems in location can still arise, as national parks don’t allow RVs that are over 27 feet on their sites. If you have found this to be your problem, or you just need a small motorhome for a small family, here are the top 5 best motorhomes for campgrounds that are all under 27 feet!

Mark Koep from Campgroundviews.com adds: “The single most important camping decision you will make is the type of RV you purchase. That decision will impact all of your options for camping as long as you use the vehicle. When comparing and considering the length and size of the RV you will find a range of options from sleeping on the ground with a sheet all the way up to 45′ luxury motor coaches. There is no “right size” for all types of camping. Instead a compromise decision needs to be made between what you want for comfort versus what you need to fit at certain sites. As a general rule of thumb units under 35′ in length will be able to find a site in RV accessible National Park campgrounds. The same holds true for Forest Service campgrounds. At the same time the shorter the unit the better off you will be for these aging campgrounds (most were built in the 60’s). Under 30′ you will have more options and under 27′ a few additional choices.”

What puts an RV on the list: There are a myriad of options to choose from when it comes to buying a motorhome. There are different classes with different engines and features, but the ones we consider the ‘best’ are the newest, as they have the best possible mileage, and from there we research the best reviews of users.

Why we recommend the Coachmen RV Freelander class C motorhome: Coachmen’s Freelander Class C has made it to more than a few top lists of the best motorhomes, no matter what the category or filter, and for a good reason. The sheer number of floorplans and expansions covers specifications of a very wide spectrum, allowing you to go for a floorplan that’s small with decent features all the way up to a 31-foot spacious camper with full-fledged amenities.

That doesn’t mean, however, that you’re stuck with one or two floorplans under the 27-feet footprint. Nearly half of the floorplans are under 27 feet, of which we recommend the Freelander 20CB Ford Transit and the Freelander 21RS Chevy 4500. As far as upgrades go, you’re not missing out on anything, as Coachmen allows you take the Freelander up a notch by adding conventional features, such as a 32-inch TV to compliance with Canadian RV standards if you’re heading to the Great White North. You can also try their Camping Cozy Package, which adds dual pane tinted windows (except 20CB), heated tank pads, and gate valve at tank.

Key Features:

  • 20 different floor plans available
  • Laminated aluminum 2″ sidewalls
  • Black power awning with weather shield
  • Roller bearing drawer guides throughout
  • Night shades and lambrequins
  • Crowned laminated TPO roof

Why we recommend Winnebago Navion class C motorhome: Short and sweet is the name of the game when it comes to the Winnebago Navion. After all, it has everything you need within the 4 floorplans (of which we recommend the Navion 24D and the Navion 24G) it provides; all of which measure the same 25 feet 8 inches and tip the scales at 11030 pounds! The difference is the layout, which determines how and where the 5 people that it can handle will sleep.

As far as features go, Winnebago has also provided comfort for the driver and the ones at the back. If you’re at the wheel, you will appreciate the inclusion of sunvisors, adjustable lumbar support, a headrest, an armrest, and 3-point seatbelts. If you’re relaxing at the back, however, you can sit back and enjoy watching some TV! On all but the Navion 24D floorplan, you’ll have the option to add a 24-inch TV. With that said, it’s no surprise that Winnebago made a winner with the Nation, and it deserves to be considered as one of the best motorhomes under 27 feet.

Key Features:

  • 4 different floor plans available
  • Cab seats armrest, adjustable lumbar support, headrest, recline, swivel and slide
  • Trailer Hitch 5,000-lb. drawbar/500-lb. maximum vertical tongue weight w/7-pin connector

Why we recommend the Thor Chateau class C motorhome: This heavy-duty motorhome comes in 17 different layouts to choose from, with many of them well under 27 feet. We specifically recommend the Chateau 23U and the Chateau 22E as fantastic choices when considering a motorhome. You can house 5 to 8 people in the Chateau, making it quite versatile on that front as well. Also, as with all of the other motorhomes, Thor has both the Chevy and the Ford engine variants for its class C motorhome.

Luxury isn’t a problem with the Chateau, either. From the electric stabilizing system and the automatic leveling jacks on the outside to the Brazilian cabinetry, LED lighting and safety options on the inside, it doesn’t leave any room for complaints. However, you can add on the existing feature set through upgrades such as a second 32-inch TV in the bedroom and convection microwave oven. You won’t go wrong the Thor Chateau as it provides you with all of the amenities you have been searching for.

Key Features:

  • 17 different floor plans available
  • Ceiling vent kitchen non-powered

Why we recommend the Coachmen RV Leprechaun Class C Motorhome: The second Coachmen motorhome included in this list has 13 floorplans, which already gives so much versatility, considering the sheer number of expansions and upgrades that can be done to the Leprechaun Class C Motorhome. Of these 13 floorplans there are 6 floorplans that are under 27 feet. Of those 6, the two we found most enjoyable were the Leprechaun 220QB Chevy 4500 and the Leprechaun 240FS Chevy 4500.

The feature list is pretty amazing on the Leprechaun too. The ones that we found extremely mentionable were the 35,000 BTU furnace and the LED overhead lighting in all of the rooms. Others may also find the upgradeability of the Leprechaun interesting, as you can add a free-standing residential dinette with four chairs. All in all, the Coachmen RV Leprechaun deserves a spot in our top 5 list as it doesn’t compromise on any aspect whatsoever.

The feature list is quite amazing on the Leprechaun as well. We really found the

Learn Coachmen RV Galleria Class B Motorhome Floorplans!

No. of Floorplans Unloaded Weight Sleeps Length
4 11030 lbs 2 24 feet

Why we recommend Coachmen RV Galleria class B motorhome: The Galleria is the only class B motorhome in the list, with a feature list to be reckoned with. As we said in the caption “don’t let the size fool you”, four of its 24 inch floorplans have multiple features at a price that’s competitive to say the least. It’s also a great size for having a sleeping capacity of 2, giving the two of you a cozy atmosphere, but also enough to have your own space.

Whether it’s the Galleria 24D you opt for or the Galleria 24Q, there’s not much of a difference you will find in terms of features. From the minor things, such as USB ports in the living area to the major ones like the Mercedes 3.0L turbo V6 diesel engine, it’s all here. You also have some options to upgrade, such as adding aftermarket remote start. But, considering that it has a such a wide array of features, it’s unlikely that you’ll feel the need to upgrade this motorhome later down the line.

Key Features:

  • 4 different floor plans available
  • Added mirror, drawer and closet rod in shirt locker
  • Wood plank vinyl flooring
  • Hardwood expanding table with cup holders
  • Front window and side airbags
  • Xenon head lamps and fog lamps
