Top 5 Best Travel Trailers For Campgrounds

Whether it’s a motorhome or a travel trailer, there are certain rules and restrictions on RVs at campgrounds across the United States. However, for the most part you can park your RV at any campground if it’s under 27 feet in length. If you are looking for a motorhome, check out  Top 5 Best Motorhomes for Campgrounds. But if it’s a travel trailer you’re looking for, here’s our list of the top 5 best travel trailers for campgrounds!

Mark Koep from Campgroundviews.com adds: “The single most important camping decision you will make is the type of RV you purchase. That decision will impact all of your options for camping as long as you use the vehicle. When comparing and considering the length and size of the RV you will find a range of options from sleeping on the ground with a sheet all the way up to 45′ luxury travel trailers. There is no “right size” for all types of camping. Instead a compromise decision needs to be made between what you want for comfort versus what you need to fit at certain sites. As a general rule of thumb units under 35′ in length will be able to find a site in RV accessible National Park campgrounds. The same holds true for Forest Service campgrounds. At the same time the shorter the unit the better off you will be for these aging campgrounds (most were built in the 60’s). Under 30′ you will have more options and under 27′ a few additional choices.”

What puts an RV on the list:  There are thousands of travel trailers to choose from, and filtering it down to ones that are under 27 feet doesn’t really narrow the options. However, that does mean that we’ve got lots of campers to put to the test. We have chosen from the newest travel trailers that have appreciable user/critic reviews.

Why we recommend the Livin Lite Camplite Travel Trailer: The brand name seems to reflect the traits of the Camplite travel trailer, as Livin Lite has kept the GVWR of this RV well under 5,000, no matter which floorplan you choose. Furthermore, all 8 floorplans are under 27 feet, giving you a lot of choices and layouts, as well as choices in sleeping capacities. We recommend checking out the Camplite CL21BHS and the Camplite CL16BHB.

No matter which one you pick, you’ll find an impressive set of features ranging from the 6 cubic feet refrigerator to the high power 12-volt vortex fan. If you’re thinking of upgrading it in the future, the Camplite is upgrade-able as well, with options for expansions. These upgrades include power awning with LED lighting, and a few other features. #2. Dutchmen Aerolite Travel Trailer

View All Dutchmen Aerolite Travel Trailer

No. of Floorplans Unloaded Weight Sleeps Length
16 4449-6665 lbs 3-8 25-34 feet

Why we recommend Dutchmen Aerolite Travel Trailer: Dutchmen offers floorplans that are under 5,000 lbs, with a few going slightly above that. However, only 2 of the floorplans are under 27 feet: the Aerolite 2133RB and the Aerolite 2110RBSL. Both of these can house 3 people, making this a very spacious and luxurious camper.

Regardless of whether you choose the 2133RB or the 2110RBSL, you’ll find the friction hinge entry door a thoughtful addition, along with the easy lube axles. If you’re buying this without the intention of changing it for a few years, you can still always upgrade a few features from time to time, adding a 15,000 BTU air conditioner instead of the proprietary installed 13,500 BTU AC. The lack of floorplans didn’t prevent the Dutchmen Aerolite from being an amazing travel trailer for campgrounds!

Why we recommend the Forest River Cherokee Grey Wolf Travel Trailer: If we could describe the Cherokee Grey Wolf by Forest River in one word, it would be stylish. But that doesn’t mean that they’ve cut corners on any other department. You’ll find tons of amazing features throughout its 25 floorplans, 6 of which are under 27 feet, such as the Cherokee Grey Wolf 20RDSE and the Cherokee Grey Wolf 17BH.

In addition to those features, we especially liked the 40-inch slide out dinette (only available on selected floorplans), and the stereo speakers on the outside. If you feel the need to add a bit more ‘oomph’ to the Grey Wolf, then there are options to add a couple of extra features: stabilizing jacks, a flat screen TV set, mini outside kitchen, an outdoor bar and grill, 2 cozy recliners, and many more like this!

No. of Floorplans Unloaded Weight Sleeps Length
30 3901-7040 lbs 3-9 23-37 feet

Why we recommend the Keystone Bullet Travel Trailer: Keystone is known for making some of the best quality travel trailers. This is easily proven by how many times we see a Keystone travel trailer on our top 5 lists. The Bullet is another one of its winners that boasts 30 floorplans, 6 of which are suitable for campgrounds. We particularly found the Bullet 220 RBI and the Bullet 204RBSWE interesting.

The Bullet has covered almost every feature you would need and more. The master bedroom features two 110V outlets to charge your devices, mirrored wardrobes, an upgraded foam mattress, and much more. You’ll probably notice the LED lighting and the residential style furniture when you first step into the trailer.

Safety is always a top priority, and you’ll find that the Bullet has a CO detector, a smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, electric brakes, safety chains, a fire escape, and even GFI receptacles. In a nutshell, you’ll find the Bullet to have more than adequate amenities on your next camping trip!

Learn Dutchmen Aspen Trail Travel Trailer Floorplans!

No. of Floorplans Unloaded Weight Sleeps Length
36 3125-8126 lbs 3-10 21-39 feet

Why we recommend Dutchmen aspen trail travel trailer: This is the second travel trailer by Dutchmen that made it to the list, and for a good reason. Among 36 (that’s right, 36!) layouts to choose from, it has 7 floorplans that are under 27 feet. We specifically recommend the Aspen Trail 2340BHS and the Aspen Trail 1900RBWE. The sleeping capacity of those 7 are 3 to 4 people with GVWR, most of them under 5,000 lbs, making it easily towable for even an SUV.

The Aspen Trail features both of the popular options when it comes to upgrades: packages that add a myriad of additional features, or standalone amenities that you’ll want to add sporadically through the years. It originally has a decent feature set too, from the construction point of view (such as the front diamond plate protection), to the convenience point of view (such as the 13,500 BTU air conditioner)!
